Overview

17th Avenue is Calgary’s main shopping and entertainment thoroughfare. The 17th Avenue Urban Design Strategy is designed to help it become a great street of community life and convenience for the surrounding neighbourhoods and a precedent setting city-wide destination.

17th Avenue is located midway between the downtown city centre and seven vital inner-city communities, providing a transition between the greater density downtown, to the lower density communities to the south.

Two open houses were held to canvas the public for their opinions about issues related to 17th Avenue. As well, the Stakeholder Advisory Group, made up of the surrounding community associations, provided input with a series of workshops and presentations.

The master plan drawing shows the six case studies superimposed onto the site plan. The public open spaces are now connected to the street and two new plazas are proposed. The findings of these case studies are part of the Approved 17 Avenue SW Urban Design Strategy for the City of Calgary.
